βAll we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.β ββ J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
I love this quote for two reasons:
- because it reminds us that our life is really only a collection of decisions, and
- life is also limited only by time
Choice
Our decisions make us who we are and dictate what we experience.Β We are free to choose, and indeed many have successfully argued that this FREEDOM TO CHOOSE is truly the only thing we really own.Β We choose how to respond to outward stimuli, how to believe, how to feel, what path to pursue.Β We even choose how to program our auto-choosing programs.Β To save time and energy, our brain pre-makes many choices for us using the program we make for it.Β For example, “When this person says that, feel this way.”Β These are based on beliefs and our beliefs are formed from how we perceive the world: our personal experiences, the words we hear, and the actions we see others take (modeling).
Time
The second reason I love Mr. Tolkein’s quote is because our lives are only limited by time.Β If we could live to an infinite amount of time, our knowledge, skill, and abilities would just keep on growing.Β Β We could all eventually be doctors, lawyers, professors, astrophysicists, or skilled artisans.Β Our knowledge of life, people, and the physical world would grow to infinite proportions.Β We could also amass massive fortunes.Β Principles of interest and progression would all work in our favor.Β And as those things seem valuable to us know, after eons, we would only come to realize there are only two things of value: our mind and our body.
Who we are is the ultimate value.Β Good people will bring about good and progression.Β Other people will always be limited by one thing: their choices.
But our life is limited by time.Β And rarity increases value.Β We have a limited time and the only substantial question is, “what are you going to do with it.”Β What path will you set out on?Β Ultimate progression toward infinite glory, or continual stagnation in un-intelligent squander.Β Β We all have within ourselves to prove who we are, and we all have it within ourselves to be great and glorious.
