Happiness happens.
And if it doesn’t come naturally, there are many things we can do to consciously create it.
Often our circumstances (or how we feel about our circumstances) either bring happiness or unhappiness.
For instance, if you see your life as a failure, you will likely be a little unhappy with that conclusion.Β If you see yourself as comparably more successful than others, that might make you feel important and … happy.
The truth is, it is best to detach our happiness from these outward indications or comparisons.Β But that’s easier to say than to do, and sometimes we do need to deal with when we fall short in our detachment efforts.
A few months ago, I got my ham radio license and bought myself a small handheld ham radio.Β It was kind of a fun little hobby for a little while.Β One thing I learned when trying to talk to others in the city it was really important where you stood.Β You could be getting a great signal and then step one foot to the side and lose the signal all together.Β So, by shifting around, you could find the best place to stand in the room to get the best signal and talk to someone else across town.
Life is also like that.
You may wake up morning and feel a bit sad.Β You look at the failed project you’ve been working on and your sad thought just start to spiral downward.Β You see a successful friend and wonder why you are not there.Β “Worthless, floppy, failure, flimerdidiggit!” you tell yourself.Β “That wasn’t nice,” you respond.Β “Oh, man!Β Not only am I a failure, I’m a not-nice person,” you cry into your hands.Β “And my hands are all wet and stuff!”Β It just keeps getting worse.
But, if you just step a foot to the side.
You slap yourself in the face and start to look for evidence that you are ACTUALLY a good person, and worth the space and air you take up.Β You remember all the victories you have enjoyed.Β Even though what’s-his-face accomplished that big thing, there are many things you have accomplished and you don’t need to compare yourself to him.Β Beside, what’s-his-face is probably crying in his bathroom wishing he was you, with your cute wife and happy children.
You fine tune your radio.Β Happiness comes streaming in clearer.Β You remember things you have done along the way, people you have helped, victories you have won, and … all of a sudden your life has not been a complete loss.Β In fact, you have much to be proud about and content with.Β And … it’s not over yet… so much more joy and happiness to be experienced.
You mark your spot, so you can return to happiness again and again when the winds of sadness blow.Β Screw you, SADNESS!Β We will NOT be taken down.Β We will fight.Β Happiness NOW AND FOREVER!Β When you spring your ugly head, we will shift our feet and defy you.Β We will deny you.Β Let the happiness stream into our life.
