My printing costs have dropped DRAMATICALLY. Now we can very easily print all the documents we want. Seriously, we print a lot. Now we go for months without refilling the ink. It seems like all we do now is load paper and continue to print. This is the best printer ever. I just wanted to share it.
I love things that are easy to use and make the world a better place. Ink cartridges are not these things. They are a bother to replace, they cost way more than they should, I have the sneaking feeling that they are never truly empty, and I really don’t want to throw them away when I’m done with them. I remember inspecting a toner cartridge before discarding it. So many beautiful intricate parts. Such a waste to throw it away. It was also expensive. It reminded me of Elon Musks comparison of throwing away a 747 every time they wanted to enter space. Here I am, on a little smaller scale, throwing away something that could be useful every time I wanted to recharge my printer. I WAS FED UP. No more. I went on a mission to eliminate ink cartridges. I began researching, determined to find the best possible printer with the best solution for ink or toner cartridges. Then, I came upon the idea:
You don’t need cartridges.
Eliminate them all together. Just buy the ink. Enter the TANK model. I first saw this idea when I had some friends who printed CDs by the hundreds. They had a CD printing printer rigged up with tubes to ink bottles. I thought it was messy and cumbersome, but it was a good start. The idea is that you have the ink in tanks on the side of the printer. You can just fill the tanks with ink rather than replace the entire cartridge. Enter the Epson Ink-Tank model of using ink. Just buy the ink, pour it in, and keep printing. This is a seriously cool concept. Now all we do is print without worry. No cartridges. Just printing. If you want my recommendation, go with the ET-3150, but there are your options. Happy printing!
This is the Best Printer Ever!

How I Came To This Conclusion
I did something really nerdy. I spreadsheeted the question. What is the best, most cost effective printer. I made a list of popular printers (both ink and toner). I took the cost of ink over the lifespan of the printer and the typical number of pages that printer can print every time you replace the cartridge or fill up the ink.
In the end, I was satisfied that it was also cheaper to ditch the cartridges. Good for the Earth. Good for the bottom line. Good for me.
I’ve used this printer (I have the previous model than the one above), and I love it. It is everything that I wanted it to be. I hardly have to fill it up, I never have to fuss with cartridges. If I don’t use it for a while, I just flush out the line (easy to do), and it works like a charm. It seems like I just keep loading paper and printing over and over. It’s not the fastest printer, but it is really cool.
