Want to increase your chances for success in life? Want to beat the odds? Well, here’s some wisdom from a man whom many would consider to be successful (at least in business). Or at least here is half the picture.
“I’m convinced that about half of what separates successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance. There are such rough moments… that most people give up.” — Steve Jobs
At the crux of this quote is perhaps one single concept, “perseverance.” What does that mean? It means that you have the gumption, the ability, and the strength of character to see things through to the end. In my book, Live a Happier, Fuller Life, I talk about this concept and I call it the character trait of stick-with-it-ness. It’s both a part of your character you want to develop and part of a principle of moving forward or making progress in your life goals. And this is what Jobs means. This principle is so important that it explains about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs (or we could apply this to people in general) from the non-successful ones.
Just imagine what you could do in your life if you could stick with every and all goals you set for yourself to create the future you desire. Most failure comes from giving up, being distracted, failing to focus. Sticking with things ensures completion, achievement, and success.
So, sounds easy, huh? But have you ever failed to stick with something? Have you ever set out on a goal and not persevered? If you’re like most humans, the answer is plenty. Indeed there might be something wrong with you or how you’re approaching life if you have never failed. Perhaps your goals are not challenging enough. Don’t do that. So, how do we set challenging goals and stick with them? How to we become better at perseverance?
I’ve got a few concepts and principles that will increase your ability to stick with something.
- Adopt purpose and passion
- Create a need
- Become obsessed
- Replace willpower with personal resolve
