No matter who you are, where you live, or what your life’s situation is, you will experience ups and downs in life. Part of the downs will be suffering. That’s just the human experience. How you respond to that, determines who you are.
When things fall apart, and at those hardest parts of life, how you behave becomes so much more important. Are you able to retain your dignity? Are you able to remain humane? Kind? Nobel? Will you push others down to save yourself, or will you stick to your principles at the expense of your comfort and freedom?
Here are some steps that might help you:
1) ACKNOWLEDGE – Recognize and acknowledge you are suffering
2) ACCEPT – Accept the suffering
3) MEANING – Search for meaning in the suffering (some silver lining that you can be grateful for, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant – every bit counts)
4) REMEMBER – Be who you are (and want to become). You are the one controlling your destiny, not your surroundings.
5) ACT – Stick to your principles and choose the higher path.
