The Main Idea
You need energy.Β Energy to get things done and live and feel alive.
Basically, the way you move from one activity to another throughout the day can have a huge impact on your level of energy.Β Stress from building up negative energy cumulatively throughout the day will zap your energy like nothingΒ else.
If you can switch properly from one task to another, you can maintain a higher level of energy.Β Switching means releasing yourself from one activity and engaging into the next.
Transition Exercise
The main idea here is to use this mental exercise to help you transition from one activity to another giving you time to rest, refocus, release non-supportive tension and energy, and ready yourself to re-engage in the next activity.Β Find out more at benbalden.com/transitionenergy.
- Letβs begin our transition exercise.
- We are going to take these next few moments to stop, release tension and negative energy, reset your stress response, and when we have cleared and recharged, we will renew our intention, re-engage, and prepare for the next activity.
- If you havenβt already done so, get somewhere quiet, reserve at least 10 minutes, and remove distractions.
- STOP
- The first step is to bring our body and mind to a full and complete stop. Focus on the idea of happiness and love.
- Give yourself permission to stop, release, and take a brief break.
- Remind yourself that by taking this time to transition and reset, you will gain more energy and time back than you invest here.
- Reassure yourself that managing your energy like this will bring produce more desired results than managing your time.
- Close your eyes. Breathe.Β Let yourself get quiet.
- RELEASE
- The next step is to release all tension and negative energy.
- Release.Β (repeat the mantra, βReleaseβ).
- Breathe deeply and as you exhale imagine this unsupportive energy leaving your body. Imagine warm glowing energy filling your body diluting and dispensing any negative energy.Β Imagine this one part at a time: your head, neck and shoulders, chest and arms, abdomen and hands, hips and upper legs, and your lower legs and feet.Β Imagine this negative energy completely replaced with the warm glowing energy.
- Breathe deeply. Β Release.Β (repeat the mantra, βReleaseβ).
- We now reset our dutiful stress response system which has so faithfully served us by giving us added energy and focus when we needed it. You are safe now.Β You feel warmth and gratitude fill your soul.Β You are at rest.Β Everything will be fine.
- RE-ENGAGE
- Breathe deeply and as you exhale, let your mind consider what you intend to achieve in your next activity.
- Ask yourself: What results do you want?Β What do you want to feel?Β State your intention.Β Visually see what you want this next activity to look like.
- Finally, visualize yourself taking the first few steps. Now, open your eyes and leave this exercise.
What We Will Cover
So, let’s talk about why you need to transition and how to do it.
The need (WHY)
Energy and stress management.Β Either way you look at it, you have the ability to manage it to live stress-free and high-energy.
Sometimes we get stuck in the last activity or status so much that we can’t successfully transition to the next.Β Successful highly performing people maintain high levels of energy because they become really good at transitioning from one task to another.Β Did you know that most successful CEO’s maintain the same level of energy as NFL athletes?1
Transitioning (WHAT)
Transitions are when you move from one activity to another.Β An example of this is when you move from being at the office to being at home with the family.Β It can also be seemingly insignificant like when you finish sending an email and go on to reviewing a report.Β The way you manage these is important.
Managing Transitions (HOW)
In his book, High Performance Habits, Brendon Burchard states that if you can manage transitioning from one task to another you can restore and amplify your energy.2
- Do you carry negative energy from one task into the next?
- Do you feel depleted at the end of a task, but just keep plowing forward?
- Are you unconnected and lack mindfulness and presence as you progress through your to-do list?
So, what are the steps you need to manage your transitions?Β GladΒ you asked.
- Step 1 ) STOP.Β When you get to the end of a task, take a moment to pause.Β Let yourself get quiet.Β You can even close your eyes.
- Step 2 ) RELEASE.Β Release all the tension and negative energy.Β You can do this by visualizing all this tension leave your body.Β Another way to trigger this release is to repeat the word, “release,” in your mind over and over.Β Focus on each part of the body and allow the energy to move out.Β You can also use the progressive body relaxation technique described on this website.Β The key is to release bad energy.Β You can carry good energy from one activity to the next.
- Step 3 ) ENGAGE.Β Think about what you want to achieve in your next activity.Β What do you want to feel?Β What is the result you want to see?Β Set your intention.Β Begin to mentally walk through the process especially the end of the process where you witness the result.Β What is the first thing you need to do? You’re done transitioning.Β Now go do the thing.
If done correctly, it will feel like you have just had a power-nap, refreshed, full of energy and ready to burst onto the next activity.
TIPS:
- Take a few moments, don’t rush it.Β The time you spend on this activity will pay for itself.Β You should take 10-20 min.Β Worth it!
- Rinse & Repeat.Β Do this activity a few times throughout the day when your tensions build up.
- Quiet and intentional.Β If you can set the mood with music, great.Β But most importantly get somewhere quiet or set a routine where you can.

Conclusion / Recap
The main idea here is that you want to live a happier, fuller life.Β Let’s get there quicker with focused intentional effort in managing that experience.Β By taking care of your energy, you can easily transition from task to task with a renewed sense of energy and keep your stress at bay.
Application in Your Life
First, you need to identify a WHEN to put this technique into practice.Β Ask, …
- When during the day do you feel the most tension?
- What events make you feel “tightness” in your body?
- When do you noticeably feel a “dip” in your energy levels?
Once you identify that time or event, plan a 10-20min “transition” session.Β In that session, simply follow the 3 steps as above:
- Step 1 ) STOP.
- Step 2 ) RELEASE.
- Step 3 ) ENGAGE.Β Β
