How do you create change in your life? How do you develop the life that you want?
There are so many books and so much content out there that offers to help you create the life you want. So, what are they all saying? Are there hundreds of ways to go about improving your life or is there basically one method?
Hi, my name is Ben Balden. I’m a personal development investigator and founder of Live a Happier, Fuller Life, a website and a book designed to help you navigate the world of personal development, so you can enjoy life to its fullest. I’m so excited to be your guide to help you discover the principles you need to create positive change in your life.
There are thousands of personal development experts out there giving advice on how to be happy or live the life you want. I regularly read and review many of them. I keep a list of the most recommended books on my website. And I’m going to share with you what they say. What’s their secret or what’s their formula.
You see many of these books break down their suggestions for change into formulas or methods. I’m going to share with you the most common methods or formulas for creating change in life that I have come across. The initial list comes from my book, Live a Happier, Fuller Life. And as I encounter more formulas, I will add them to this list.
Formulas and Methods for Creating Change In Life
- T > F > A = R: (Thoughts lead to Feelings lead to Actions which bring about Results). In his book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, T. Harv Eker refers to this formula as the process of manifestation.
- E + R = O: (Event + Response = Outcome) Jack Canfield calls this the responsibility formula in his book The Success Principles by Jack Canfield and Janet Switzer.
- B > T > F > A > R: (Beliefs inspire your Thoughts which influence your Feelings that lead to your Actions that determine your Results). I’m not sure where I got this formula, but it seems to be a common version among personal development experts.
- S – C – R: (In between Stimulus and Response, you have a Choice) Dr. Stephen Covey in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, refers to this as your opportunity to direct your life. He drew heavily from Dr Viktor Frankl’s work.
- E>D>A>D: (Emotions trigger Decisions which cause Actions that lead to your Destiny). Tony Robbins in this in his programs and books. See Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins and Ultimate Edge.
- C+D+C+A+P+A=>R: (6 Success Elements: Clarification, Deliberation, Choice, Affirmation, Planning, and Acting bring Results). “A well-known Italian psychiatrist, Dr. Rudolph Assagioli, found that successful people use specific steps that include clarification, deliberation, choice, affirmation, planning, and acting on the plan.” See more in the book, Stress Free for Good by Frederic Luskin and Dr. Ken Pelletier; CH6.
- C + B => A: (Whatever your mind can Conceive and Believe, it can Achieve); In his book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill describes this mindset formula in the simplistic concept of, “think it and get it.”
- T + F => R: (Your Thoughts and Feelings create your Results). This is the formula of the Law of Attraction, which is the basis philosophy of the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. The basic thrust of this philosophy is that we attract whatever we desire, focus on, or expect.
- Y,T,W,D>>G: Watch yourself, your thoughts, words, and deeds to achieve the goal of becoming what you want to become. This comes from religious teachings about what thoughts you entertain. (Mosiah 4:30)
- V>B>M>A>S>T>M>E>F>W>A>H>C>P>YOU: There are many forms of this concept out there. This is a synthesized version of everything I’ve seen. For our purposes, let’s call it the creation continuum or the levels of creation starting with a set of core foundational principles and values and eventually ending up with who you become as a person. You plant the seed at the base of your values, and you blossom into a unique individual. And, of course, you have a choice to influence each level along the continuum.

What many of these formulas have in common is that change comes from action and action comes from organizing your mental resources. Can you see how many of them start with thoughts or beliefs and then move into actions, targeted actions, and then move into results?
So, in an effort to organize, or synthesize all this advice out there, I have come up with the creation formula or mindset formula.
If you just combine many of the popular methods for creating change in your life, you get a chart something like this. And regardless of what you call each stage, the overall process still ends up being about the same no matter what formula you use – for the most part.
The Creation formula breakdown chart
Programming | Feelings | Actions | Results |
-Subconscious beliefs
-Mental scripts (self-talk) -Paradigms -Mental files -Beliefs -Mindset -Thoughts -Subconscious programming -Stories of self -Attitude our outlook |
-Mood and attitude
-Feelings -Emotions -Thoughts -Unchecked words -Stupor -Lapses in memory -Timely memory recall -Sudden feelings of unwellness -Boost of energy -Other subconscious signals, intuition, gut feelings, and dispositions |
-What you do without thinking it through
-Automatic emotional responses -Instant reactions -Reflexes -Responses -Reactions -Choices based on feelings -Acting from subconscious programming -General behavior based on mood |
-Natural consequences of actions
-Results -Outcomes -Destination -What you experience -Achievements -Failures -Life’s Situation
*these then reinforce your beliefs by providing physical evidence (creation circle) and influencing meaning and interpretation |
This formula is at the core of my 4 Steps of Personal Development in 6 Areas of Life. You need to somehow wake up and come to the realization that you need to make change in your life, then decide what you want, then, using the CREATION FORMULA, you get your mind in order (or focus you minds) and then take the actions you need to take to bring about the results you want in your life. And this can be done in any of the six areas of life.
- 4 Steps
- Wake Up – believe it’s possible
- Get Clear – decide what you want
- Focus – align your conscious and subconscious minds
- Move Forward – making progress
- 6 Areas of Life
- Character
- Wellness
- Wealth
- Relationships
- Contribution
- Lifestyle
